One of the largest airlines in the country is IndiGo. Recently the company has taken an important decision. Which is the way?
The airline will temporarily suspend its flights to Manchester, United Kingdom from August 31. The company cited increasing operational challenges and rising costs as reasons behind the decision. The move comes at a time when the company is facing financial pressure and operational disruptions caused by restrictions imposed on international airspace.
Difficulties will increase due to closed airspaces
Due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia, many countries have closed their airspace. These include countries ranging from Iran to Kuwait, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon. All of them have imposed restrictions on their air routes considering the possibility of security threats. To avoid these restricted airspaces, airlines are forced to fly through safer countries. As a result, the route of flights to and from India and Europe has increased significantly.
What exactly is the challenge facing the company?
Indigo Airlines currently connects Manchester to both Delhi and Mumbai. These services were started in the month of July last year. All this was part of IndiGo’s wider efforts to strengthen its long-haul international network. In a statement, the company noted, “Due to the current restrictions in the international airspace, flight durations have increased significantly and the cost situation has also become challenging. Due to these reasons, IndiGo has been forced to temporarily suspend its operations to and from Manchester from 31 August 2026.”
Overall, the company faces several challenges; These include increased travel time on long-haul routes, rising costs of ATF and increased operational costs due to fluctuations in foreign exchange rates.
Reimbursement of leased aircraft
As part of restructuring of its long-haul services, IndiGo had taken a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on lease from Norse Atlantic Airways but will now return it. Actually this decision is going to be difficult for the company. The airline has suffered a loss of ₹2,536.9 crore in the January-March quarter of the financial year 2025-26. Which represents a huge and significant change from the profit of ₹3,067.5 crore reported in the same period last year. So, until the global situation stabilizes, we have to see what exactly is the impact on airlines along with other factors.
