New Delhi: The Norwegian Football Federation (NFF) has formally requested FIFA’s Ethics Committee to investigate the decision to award a Peace Prize to United States President Donald Trump. The NFF announced on Tuesday that it had approached FIFA’s Ethics Committee to review the procedure followed in granting this recognition to President Trump.

The award was conferred on the US President by FIFA President Gianni Infantino during the draw ceremony for the 2026 FIFA World Cup on December 6. Following the presentation, widespread questions began to emerge among football officials and organizations. Critics argue that conferring such an honour could compromise FIFA’s stance of political neutrality.

Human rights group lodges complaint

The matter intensified when the human rights organization Fairsquare lodged a formal complaint with FIFA’s Ethics Committee. The group alleged that FIFA President Gianni Infantino breached his obligation of impartiality by publicly expressing support for Donald Trump. Fairsquare emphasized that international sporting bodies must refrain from showing favoritism towards any political figure, as such actions could undermine the integrity and credibility of global sports institutions.

Concerns about transparency in award process

Another source of contention is FIFA’s lack of clarity regarding the criteria used to determine the Peace Prize recipient. Critics have pointed out that FIFA did not disclose the evaluation procedures, raising concerns about transparency. The timing of the award also drew attention, as Donald Trump and his supporters were already campaigning for his consideration for the Nobel Peace Prize. This coincidence has further fueled debate over FIFA’s decision.

NFF President shares her perspective

Norwegian Football Federation President Lise Klevnes stated that she had taken the initiative independently. She mentioned that other football associations were free to join this effort if they wished, but there was no attempt to influence or pressure anyone. Klevnes clarified that her intention was not to create discord, but to ensure a fair and impartial review of the situation. She added that transparency and accountability are essential to preserve the credibility of sporting organizations.

Discussion around Infantino–Trump relationship

In recent years, the close relationship between FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Donald Trump has come under frequent discussion. This association has been particularly notable in the lead-up to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Experts acknowledge that cooperation between FIFA and the US administration is expected ahead of such a major event, but caution that sports governing bodies must take special care to uphold their image of neutrality.
