The ongoing speculation around Bernardo Silva’s future continues to dominate Spanish football conversations, with the talented playmaker almost certain to make a move to La Liga after spending nearly ten years with Manchester City.
Silva has chosen not to extend his contract at the Etihad Stadium, making him available as a free agent this summer. This decision has drawn strong interest from both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, who have emerged as the two leading contenders for his signature.
Earlier reports suggested that Barcelona were struggling to finalise the deal due to financial constraints, potentially giving Atletico Madrid the upper hand in the race.
However, according to journalist Gerard Romero, the Portugal international was engaged in advanced discussions with Atletico Madrid regarding a possible free transfer to the Spanish capital.
Silva, though, has reportedly made his stance crystal clear to the Madrid-based club. The midfielder informed Atletico that his heart is set on joining Barcelona instead.
“My priority is Barça. And if Barcelona completes everything with me as expected, I’m sorry but I won’t be able to join you,” Silva is quoted as saying to Atletico Madrid, as reported by Romero.
This statement comes as a major setback for Atletico Madrid, who had recently been mocking Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez. Missing out on a free agent of Silva’s calibre would be particularly embarrassing for the club, especially if the Portuguese star ultimately secures a move to Camp Nou.
For Barcelona, the coming days will be crucial as the club works to clear enough financial space to not only announce Silva’s arrival but also register him in time for the upcoming season.
