Ruben Amorim could be set for a dramatic return to English football, with Fulham reportedly adding the 41-year-old coach to their shortlist to replace Marco Silva, according to a fresh report.
After showing loyalty for 14 months despite mounting evidence of decline, INEOS finally ended Amorim’s turbulent spell in January following a poor run of results during the Christmas period. Yet, it wasn’t only the on-field struggles that sealed his fate; a major disagreement with sporting director Jason Wilcox regarding the unpopular 3-4-2-1 formation ultimately proved to be the breaking point for the fiery Portuguese manager.
The decision to part ways came on 5 January, just one day after a 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road, where Amorim had publicly criticised the club’s executive structure in an explosive post-match press conference. Under-18s coach Darren Fletcher stepped in as interim manager before Michael Carrick made a successful return to Old Trafford as caretaker coach until the end of the season.
Over the past five months, Carrick’s remarkable transformation of the squad convinced INEOS to appoint him permanently. Under his leadership, Manchester United secured qualification for the Champions League and enjoyed the best form among all Premier League teams during that stretch.
The chaos of Amorim’s tenure now feels like a distant memory, replaced by a renewed sense of stability across the club thanks to Carrick’s composed management both on and off the pitch.
The former Sporting CP boss left behind a disappointing legacy with a win rate of just 38.1%, overseeing United’s worst Premier League campaign in their history—culminating in a crushing defeat in the Europa League final to a team that had never previously lifted a European trophy.
Despite his underwhelming record, TEAMtalk reports that Amorim remains under “serious consideration” at Craven Cottage. Fulham’s long-serving coach Marco Silva has departed west London to take over at SL Benfica, after the Portuguese club was left without a manager following Jose Mourinho’s high-profile return to Real Madrid.
Interestingly, Amorim was also linked with the Benfica role, despite the fierce rivalry between them and Sporting. However, sources indicate that he is more inclined to pursue opportunities outside Portugal should he resume his managerial career.
Two other recently dismissed Premier League managers, Thomas Frank (Tottenham Hotspur) and Arne Slot (Liverpool), are also being considered by Fulham alongside Amorim.
“All three are admired internally and are seen as coaches capable of building upon the foundations laid by Silva. Fulham are expected to hold discussions in the coming days to assess which of these candidates could realistically be persuaded to take the job in west London,” the report explains.
Keiran McKenna, Manchester United’s former assistant now managing Ipswich Town, and Frank Lampard, who recently guided Coventry City to a Championship title, are also believed to be in the mix. However, TEAMtalk emphasises that Amorim remains “firmly on Fulham’s radar”, suggesting that a disappointing stint at Old Trafford does not necessarily tarnish a manager’s standing in football permanently.
