Dhaka. Former Bangladesh cricket team captain Tamim Iqbal was elected the new president of Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Sunday. Tamim, who was elected unopposed, expressed his resolve to increase transparency, give respect to players and reinvigorate the image of Bangladesh cricket by taking charge of the board.
Tamim, 36, will lead the board for the next four years. After the election he said that this post is more of a responsibility than an honor for him. He said that in the last few years he had raised many issues regarding cricket administration and now he has got the opportunity to prove himself.
23 directors were selected in the election held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka, while the total strength of the board increased to 25 with the addition of two representatives nominated by the government. After this the new council unanimously elected Tamim as the president.
Tamim named the establishment of modern High Performance Center (HPC) as the top priority of his tenure. He said that this is his biggest dream and for this the support of the government will also be necessary. The proposed center is planned to be developed in the Purvanchal region near Dhaka, which will be much more advanced than the existing training facilities.
The new president also mentioned the recent challenges of Bangladesh cricket. He said that in the last one and a half years, players and other stakeholders did not get the expected respect, which affected the image of cricket. Tamim stressed that respect and participation from both current and former players would be given priority.
He also assured more accountability and transparency in the functioning of the board. Tamim said that his aim is to work with honesty and if any mistake happens, he will try to correct it as soon as possible.
Tamim Iqbal, one of Bangladesh’s greatest cricketers, played 391 matches in his international career and scored more than 15,000 runs across all three formats. As captain, he led Bangladesh to 21 wins, including a historic ODI series win against South Africa in 2022.
Even after retiring from international cricket in early 2025, Tamim continued playing domestic cricket, but his playing career came to an end after suffering a heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League match. Now he will take up the responsibility of giving a new direction to Bangladesh cricket in an administrative role.
