Who is Alexander Zverev, who won the French Open title?

Alexander Zverev has become the new king of red gravel. This German player has won the French Open 2026 title. Zverev won the first Grand Slam title of his career by defeating Italy’s Flavio Coboli 6-1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-7(5), 6-1 in a 5-set final. Before this, this 29 year old player had lost 3 Grand Slam finals.

 

Zverev also came close to the French Open title in 2024 but had to face defeat in the final. Leaving this disappointment behind, he finally won his first Grand Slam title. Zverev has become the first German male player to win the French Open title in 89 years.

 

Koboli gave tough competition

Zverev made a strong start in the final match played on Sunday (June 7) and won the first match easily 6-1. Koboli came back in the second set and won it 6-4. Zverev took the lead by winning the third set 6-4 but Koboli won the fourth set in a tie-breaker 7-6(5) to take the match to the fifth set.

 

In the fifth and deciding set, Zverev did not give Koboli any chance and won 6-1. With this he ended the drought of 30 years. In fact, for the first time since 1996, a German male player became Grand Slam champion.

 

Who is Zverev?

Alexander Zverev’s roots are linked to Russia. Zverev’s parents played tennis for the Soviet Union, causing him to fall in love with the sport at an early age. Zverev has been world number-1 in the junior circuit. She won a junior major singles title at the Australian Open in 2014. Zverev, currently ranked number 3, had defeated veteran tennis player Roger Federer in his teenage years.

 

Zverev is one of the youngest players to win an ATP Challenger Tour title at the age of 17. This 6 feet 6 inches tall player has been playing in Grand Slam tournaments for 11 years. Apart from losing the Grand Slam finals thrice, Zverev has also suffered defeat in the semi-finals seven times. Now he has ended the drought of Grand Slam title. Zverev’s biggest achievement before this was victory in the final of the Tokyo Olympics. He created history by winning gold.
