New Delhi. The Indian cricket team definitely won the T20 World Cup this year under the captaincy of Suryakumar Yadav, but the script regarding their future was written even before this tournament. The T20 World Cup started on February 7, but the BCCI had sent the long list of probable players for the Asian Games to the Indian Olympic Association even before its start. Sources reveal that Surya’s name was not in this list. This clearly means that the BCCI think tank was already aware that Suryakumar was not fitting into the plans for the 2028 T20 World Cup.

With cricket being included in the Olympics and bitterness with Pakistan at its peak, the Asian Games have become important for the BCCI. BCCI did make some changes in the long list of Asian Games. It was decided to send the main team to the Asiad, but despite winning the T-20 World Cup, 35-year-old Surya was kept out of it.
Coach Gautam Gambhir is known for his long term plans. After winning the 2024 World Cup, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli had announced their retirement from T20. After this, while making Suryakumar the captain, it was said that he has got the responsibility keeping in mind the 2026 T-20 World Cup. As soon as the 2026 World Cup arrived, the board started implementing the plans for the 2028 World Cup. Surya’s poor form and his increasing age played an important role in this, due to which he was left out of future plans even before the World Cup.
