The bodies of six people from the Naga community, who were missing after being abducted on May 13 from Manipur’s Leelon Vaifei village, have been recovered. All the bodies have been kept in the mortuary of Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal. There has been a wave of mourning and an atmosphere of anger in the entire area after the dead body was found after about 28 days. The relatives of the deceased and the community members have demanded an impartial investigation into the matter along with ensuring the identification of the bodies.

Liangmai Naga Council Manipur President Timothy Vijunamai said that first of all it will be ensured whether the bodies found are of the same six missing people or not. “First of all we have to check the condition of the bodies. It is necessary to ensure that these bodies are indeed those of our six missing people,” he said. Vijunamai further said that after identification of the bodies and other necessary procedures are completed, a meeting with the families of the victims will be held to decide the future course of action. “We will have to discuss with the families of the victims and only then decide on the next step,” he said.

Expressing displeasure over the functioning of the government, Vijunamai said that it is very disappointing that it took 28 days to bring the dead bodies to Imphal. He said, “How can we be satisfied? It took 28 days to bring the bodies here. We are extremely disappointed with the way the government has acted. Now we will see what further steps the government takes.”

According to the information given by Manipur Police, about 450 personnel of Manipur Police, CRPF and Assam Rifles conducted a continuous search operation for about 24 hours with the help of sniffer dogs and forensic experts. Six bodies were recovered during this operation. It is suspected that these bodies are of the same people who were taken hostage from Leilon Waifei on 13 May 2026.

Meanwhile, three Kuki church leaders were killed while five others were injured in violence triggered by tension between Kuki and Naga communities in the hill districts of Manipur. It is being told that these six persons were also among those kidnapped during this period.
