Now, having opened accounts under this scheme, these women have direct control over their own money—a crucial step forward for every woman.

How to Open an Account?

Have you ever availed the benefits of this scheme? If not, you should certainly open an account under it. It is not too late; you can still open an account. Here is how:

You can open an account under this scheme at any government or private bank.
You will need an identity proof and an address proof for this; documents such as an Aadhaar card, Voter ID, PAN card, or driving license are required.
If you do not possess these documents, you can open a 'Small Account' (Small Deposit Account) in accordance with bank regulations.
In the absence of standard documents, you must submit a letter issued by a gazetted officer, accompanied by a duly attested photograph.

If you open an account under this scheme, you will receive the following benefits:

Interest on the deposited amount.
Accidental insurance cover of up to ₹1 lakh.
No requirement to maintain a minimum balance. Beneficiaries can avail of life insurance coverage of up to ₹30,000 upon death, starting from a zero-balance account.
Beneficiaries of government schemes will derive benefits from these accounts.
An overdraft facility will be available after six months of satisfactory account operation.
