The Hosur plant of Tata Group company ‘Tata Electronics’, which manufactures iPhone parts in Tamil Nadu, has got a big relief. The Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) has completely closed the ongoing pollution- investigation against the factory. According to Reuters report, Tata Electronics has issued an official statement confirming that the Pollution Board has considered the responses given by the company completely satisfactory and no further punitive action will be taken in this matter.

There was danger of power cut and closure of the factory.

Actually, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had issued a strict warning notice to Tata Electronics. In this notice, it was warned that if the company does not take proper response and concrete steps on the pollution concerns, then the power of the factory can be cut and the unit can also be forcibly closed on the charges of violation of rules. After this tough stance, speculations were being made whether Tata’s iPhone factory will be closed? However, now the regulator has clarified that the lab report of water samples taken recently from the company’s Hosur plant has not found any indication of any kind of pollution or toxic elements.

What was the whole matter and why was the pollution board angry?

This whole controversy started when local farmers farming around the plant complained to the pollution board for months. Farmers alleged that the chemical-laden dirty water coming out of the factory was contaminating the land and open wells of their fields.

According to the notice dated May 25, 2026, issued by the regulator, officials had conducted surprise inspections of the plant five times between December 2025 and May 2026. Investigation had revealed that Tata Electronics had released dirty water into the rainwater harvesting pond built inside its facility. When this pond overflowed during monsoon or heavy rains, its contaminated water mixed with the groundwater of nearby agricultural lands and wells, making the water unfit for drinking and irrigation.

Independent lab investigation and Tata Electronics’ side

After receiving the notice, Tata Electronics, considering the seriousness of the matter, got the water samples studied and scientifically analyzed by a government recognized independent lab. This independent investigation report proved that the company is fully following all the regulatory rules to environmental protection. The company submitted its formal reply to the Pollution Board with these strong scientific results. Tata Electronics reiterates that they are a responsible business group and are fully committed to protecting local communities and the environment.

Let us tell you that this Tata Group company is the second largest supplier of the giant tech company Apple in South Asia after Taiwan’s Foxconn. Back panels and other important parts of iPhone are made in this Hosur plant in Tamil Nadu. After getting the clean chit from the board, production will continue here without any interruption.
