Rodrigo De Paul has lavished praise on Argentina captain Lionel Messi for his remarkable team-first attitude following the forward’s record-equalling hat-trick at the World Cup. Despite matching Miroslav Klose’s all-time goalscoring record in the tournament, the veteran striker remains completely focused on collective glory rather than personal accolades, underlining his priceless value to the reigning South American champions.
Record-equalling night for Argentina
Argentina have begun their World Cup journey in emphatic fashion, once again demonstrating why they are such a formidable force. De Paul was among the first to hail Messi’s latest masterclass after the Inter Miami forward struck three times in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Algeria.
With his treble, the 38-year-old equalled Miroslav Klose’s iconic record of 16 goals in World Cup tournaments. During his 80 minutes on the pitch, the Argentina skipper produced 57 touches, fired four shots on target, and orchestrated play with trademark vision and control.
Messi also maintained an 81% pass completion rate and created two key scoring opportunities. Yet, according to his teammate, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner remains completely grounded and devoted to the team’s collective mission despite his dazzling personal numbers.
Team comes before individual glory
Speaking to the media after the match, De Paul elaborated on why Messi’s leadership is so crucial to Argentina’s ambitions of securing back-to-back world titles. Having lifted the trophy in Qatar four years ago, the Albiceleste are depending heavily on their talisman to inspire another historic triumph.
De Paul highlighted Messi’s humility and selfless character, stressing that group success always takes precedence over individual recognition for the legendary number 10. “It’s a blessing to have Leo, not only because of his talent but because of the way he leads and unites the group,” De Paul said. “He doesn’t think about personal records; he puts the team first, and for us that’s incredible.”
Irreplaceable leader in the dressing room
Messi’s influence extends far beyond the pitch, as midfielder Alexis Mac Allister also underscored his indispensable role within the national setup. The Liverpool star dismissed any notion that Argentina could perform better without their iconic captain, firmly reiterating Messi’s importance to the squad’s morale and performance.
Mac Allister expressed his admiration in no uncertain terms, stating: “There are no words for Messi! If anyone ever thought this team was stronger without Leo, it’s clear now that he is absolutely the most important player.”
The defending champions currently lead Group J on goal difference, having claimed a vital opening win to set the early pace in their campaign.
What lies ahead for Messi and Argentina?
Looking forward, Lionel Scaloni’s side will face Austria on June 22 in Dallas in a contest that could determine who tops the group, after the European team’s 3-1 victory over Jordan. Argentina will then wrap up their group stage against Jordan. If Messi maintains his exceptional form, Argentina’s prospects of retaining their world title appear increasingly strong.
