Meet the Referee for Spain vs Saudi Arabia Clash at the World Cup

The FIFA World Cup continues into its 11th day, with European champions Spain preparing to face Saudi Arabia in what promises to be a crucial Group H encounter.

Group H remains finely balanced, as all four teams currently sit on one point apiece. Spain were held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde, while Saudi Arabia shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw against Uruguay. With such tight competition, a victory for either side could significantly boost their chances of progressing to the final 32.

FIFA has officially announced the team of referees for this fixture, naming Brazilian referee Raphael Claus as the man in charge. The 46-year-old, who has been part of the FIFA referees’ list since 2015, is widely recognised as one of South America’s top officials.

Claus has an impressive résumé, having officiated the 2024 Copa America final between Argentina and Colombia. He is also a familiar face in the Copa Libertadores, where he once took charge of a heated semi-final between River Plate and Boca Juniors.

This match marks Claus’ first assignment of the current World Cup. However, he previously officiated two matches during the 2022 tournament — England’s 6-2 victory over Iran, which included a controversial late penalty for Iran, and Morocco’s 2-1 win against Canada.

Assisting Claus on the sidelines will be Brazilian assistant referees Danilo Manis and Rafael Alves. Colombia’s Andres Rojas will serve as the fourth official, with fellow Colombian Alexander Guzman designated as the reserve referee.

Video Assistant Referee (VAR) responsibilities will be handled by Colombian official Nicolas Gallo. He will be supported by assistant VAR Erick Miranda and support VAR Guillermo Pacheco, both from Mexico. The assistant VAR aids in reviewing and confirming decisions, while the support VAR manages communication and monitors the live broadcast feed during ongoing checks — a crucial distinction for ensuring smooth match operations.

Saudi Arabia will look to build on their 1-1 draw with Uruguay, while Spain aims to rediscover their scoring touch after a frustrating stalemate with Cape Verde. With Raphael Claus and his experienced team overseeing proceedings, fans can expect a well-managed and fair contest.
