The fierce rivalry between Barcelona and Real Madrid extends well beyond the boundaries of El Clasico.

It shapes transfer strategies, influences youth development, drives scouting priorities, and even impacts the career choices of young footballers.

That is why it always sparks intrigue when a player who once trained at Barcelona’s renowned La Masia academy ends up donning the iconic white jersey of Real Madrid.

Although direct transfers between the two Spanish giants are extremely uncommon, several players who spent formative years at Barcelona’s youth academy have eventually found their way to the Santiago Bernabéu.

Some used Real Madrid as a springboard to revive their careers, others struggled to make a lasting impact in the first team, while a few became valuable financial assets for Los Blancos despite never becoming regular starters.

Here are three players who began their football journeys at La Masia before later signing for Real Madrid.

Marc Cucurella, a product of La Masia, is the latest addition to this rare list. The Spanish full-back recently completed a major transfer from Chelsea to Real Madrid, despite reported interest from both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Born in Catalonia, Cucurella joined Barcelona’s famous academy in 2012, quickly emerging as one of the standout talents in his age group.

However, despite progressing through the youth categories, first-team opportunities were scarce. His senior involvement at Barcelona was limited to a single appearance before he embarked on loan spells in search of regular playing time.

Stints at Eibar and Getafe were crucial for his development, and his permanent move to Getafe allowed him to demonstrate his high-intensity style and attacking prowess—qualities that ultimately earned him a move to the English Premier League.

After successful spells with Brighton & Hove Albion and Chelsea, Cucurella re-established himself as one of Europe’s most dependable left-backs. Real Madrid secured his services for an initial €55 million plus an additional €5 million in performance-related add-ons.

Victor Munoz, another Catalan-born talent, has also attracted attention recently following his transfer to Liverpool—a move that brought Real Madrid a significant financial windfall.

Like Cucurella, Munoz spent his early football years at La Masia, joining Barcelona’s academy at the age of 11. In 2017, he left the club to join Damm, and four years later, Real Madrid recognised his potential and signed him into their youth system.

The winger continued to grow within Madrid’s academy and made his first-team debut in May 2025. In an ironic twist, that debut came during an El Clasico clash against Barcelona, where he replaced Vinicius Jr. late in the match.

Despite being remembered for missing a clear scoring opportunity in that game, Real Madrid maintained faith in his ability. Seeking more playing time, Munoz later joined Osasuna, with Los Blancos retaining 50% of his economic rights—a decision that paid off handsomely when Liverpool triggered his €40 million release clause.

This clause meant Real Madrid earned €20 million from the deal, despite Munoz never becoming a regular first-team player, showcasing the club’s increasingly strategic approach to talent development and asset management.

Takefusa Kubo is perhaps the most well-known player among those who started at La Masia and later joined Real Madrid.

The Japanese international joined Barcelona’s academy in 2011 after impressing during trials and was widely regarded as one of the most promising players in the system.

Kubo spent four years developing at La Masia before FIFA sanctions against Barcelona for recruiting underage foreign players forced him into an unexpected situation. The ruling made him ineligible to play competitively for the club, leading to his departure.

In 2019, Real Madrid seized the opportunity to sign the talented playmaker on a five-year deal. Although expectations were high, Kubo was unable to cement a place in Madrid’s senior team and instead went on a series of loan spells across Spain to gain experience.

He eventually found consistency and success at Real Sociedad, where he has evolved into one of La Liga’s most influential attacking players.
