Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni were reportedly involved in a training-ground altercation last season, and Real Madrid now appear to have made their choice between the two midfielders.

Manchester United have shown interest in both players as part of their plans to bring in a marquee signing to strengthen their midfield options at Old Trafford.

Under manager Jose Mourinho, Real Madrid are also looking to overhaul their squad and are open to letting go of one of their star midfielders.

According to AS, the club intends to “completely turn things around” following two consecutive seasons without a trophy.

To fund new signings, Real Madrid are reportedly willing to sanction a major sale in midfield.

It is believed that Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga are the “main candidates” who could be offloaded.

While Federico Valverde is also admired by several Premier League clubs, Real Madrid have not “lost faith” in the Uruguayan international. The club considers “the matter closed” regarding his future.

This update will be encouraging for Manchester United, who have long been interested in Tchouameni.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano previously reported that Tchouameni is viewed as the “dream target” for the Red Devils, with recruitment director Christopher Vivell said to be particularly keen on securing the 26-year-old midfielder’s signature.

The 6ft 2in Frenchman has two years remaining on his current contract with Real Madrid.

The La Liga giants are expected to demand a transfer fee of around €100 million (£87 million) for the player.

Given the high asking prices for Premier League midfielders such as Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, the chance to sign a Champions League winner and a regular starter for France could be an opportunity too good to overlook for Manchester United.
