Chelsea captain Reece James has confessed that he feels "devastated" following Marc Cucurella’s transfer to Real Madrid. The Spanish full-back has sealed a major move to the Santiago Bernabeu to reunite with Jose Mourinho, leaving a noticeable gap in Chelsea’s defensive setup.
Reece James shares his reaction to Cucurella’s departure
James has spoken candidly about the emotional impact of losing Cucurella to Real Madrid this summer. The Spanish international completed his transfer to the European champions for €55 million (£47.5m/$63m), with an additional €5 million in potential add-ons. His move ends a four-year spell at Stamford Bridge, during which he contributed to Chelsea’s triumphs in the Club World Cup and the Conference League.
Speaking to talkSPORT from England’s World Cup training camp in Kansas City, James expressed how difficult it was to say goodbye to his teammate. “Yeah, I spoke with him a few days ago,” he said. “He’s obviously an incredible player, one of the best left-backs in the world. That’s football — players move on regularly, and I’m devastated to see him go. But I wish him all the best.”
Xabi Alonso faces an immediate defensive test
Cucurella’s exit presents an early challenge for newly appointed Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso. The Spaniard, named as the permanent replacement for Liam Rosenior after his dismissal in April, now faces the task of filling the void left by a player who featured more than 160 times for the London club. Alonso’s appointment marks the start of yet another chapter in the BlueCo ownership era, making him the sixth permanent manager since the takeover.
Despite the setback, Chelsea remain confident about their internal options. Young defender Jorrel Hato has consistently impressed at Stamford Bridge, while Argentine international Valentin Barco is expected to join from sister club Strasbourg. In addition, 19-year-old Portuguese talent Geovany Quenda is arriving from Sporting CP to strengthen the squad, signalling a fresh beginning under Alonso’s guidance.
James optimistic about Alonso’s arrival
Even with the disappointment of losing a close teammate, James is enthusiastic about what lies ahead under Alonso’s management. The arrival of such a renowned figure has clearly lifted spirits within the dressing room. Having grown up watching Alonso control midfields across Europe, James is eager to learn from one of the game’s great tactical minds.
The England international revealed that he has already spoken with the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich star. For the Chelsea captain, the chance to work under a manager with Alonso’s pedigree offers hope during a period of transition. “Everyone I’ve spoken to about him (Alonso) says he’s a brilliant manager, though he’s best known for his playing career,” James said. “He had an amazing career and I’m really looking forward to working with him.”
Adapting to life under a footballing icon at Cobham
Being coached by someone of Alonso’s stature can feel surreal, and James admits it will take some getting used to. Alonso only hung up his boots in 2017, meaning many players in the current squad vividly remember his performances for Liverpool and Real Madrid. However, James is no stranger to learning from his childhood idols.
“I experienced the same thing when Frank Lampard became manager,” James recalled. “He was one of my heroes when I was growing up, and having him as my coach felt unreal. Like I said, I’m thrilled that Xabi Alonso is our manager and I’m looking forward to what’s ahead.”
