Argentina and Austria both began their World Cup campaigns with victories, defeating Algeria and Jordan respectively in their opening matches.
The two teams will face off tonight, with a win guaranteeing a place in the next round of the competition.
Egyptian referee Amin Omar has been appointed to officiate the encounter, supported by two fellow Egyptian assistants.
This will be Omar’s second appearance at the tournament, having previously overseen the opening-round fixture between Czechia and South Korea.
The 40-year-old referee has been officiating in the Egyptian Premier League for the past 13 years and brings significant international experience, having participated in every Africa Cup of Nations since 2019.
According to statistics from Transfermarkt, during the 2025–26 regular season, Omar oversaw 12 matches, issuing 53 yellow cards and dismissing three players—each following a second yellow card.
Omar will be assisted by Mahmoud Abou El Regal and Ahmed Hossam Taha, both from Egypt, who will serve as assistant referees on the sidelines.
The fourth official and reserve assistant referee will be Alejandro Hernandez and Diego Sanchez, both hailing from Spain.
In domestic Egyptian football, Omar typically hands out between three and four yellow cards per game and produces a red card roughly once every five matches.
He is also known to award penalties slightly less often than once every two matches at the club level.
Austria will look to build on their victory over Jordan, while Argentina will aim to maintain momentum from their win against Algeria. A triumph for either side tonight would secure progression to the knockout stage, though a defeat would not end their hopes entirely.
Argentina’s next fixture will be against Jordan, while Austria will face Algeria, leaving both teams with opportunities to qualify for the next round regardless of tonight’s result.
