Ipswich Town Football Club has officially confirmed the appointment of Gary O’Neil as their new manager.
The recently promoted team, affectionately known as the Tractor Boys, had been searching for a replacement for Kieran McKenna, who departed after leading the side to top-flight promotion for the second time.
Gary O’Neil, who previously managed Bournemouth and Wolverhampton Wanderers, has now been named McKenna’s successor. The 43-year-old has signed a three-year contract with Ipswich after most recently taking charge of Strasbourg in France, where he succeeded Liam Rosenior.
Upon his appointment, O’Neil expressed his excitement, saying, “It is an honour to be appointed manager of this great football club.”
He continued, “I have followed the progress the club has made over the past few years very closely, and to now have the chance to lead Ipswich Town in the Premier League is something I am hugely excited about.”
“There is a strong vision and ambition at this club, and I am fully aware of the responsibility that comes with it, especially given how much it means to the supporters and the communities of Ipswich and Suffolk.”
“We all understand the challenges ahead as we prepare for the season together, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone and getting started.”
O’Neil’s first Premier League fixture with Ipswich will be a home game against Sunderland on August 22. That will be followed by an away trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United before returning to host Liverpool at Portman Road.
