The Czech Republic’s campaign at the World Cup has come to an early end following their group stage elimination. On Wednesday night, the team was knocked out after suffering a 0–3 defeat to Mexico. Over the course of the group stage, which also included South Africa and South Korea, the Czechs managed to secure only one point.
In the aftermath of the disappointing exit, forward Patrik Schick has announced his decision to retire from international football. The Czech Football Federation confirmed the news in an official statement.
“I believe Czech football has far greater potential than what we’ve demonstrated in recent years. We must face reality and make significant changes to address what hasn’t worked over the long term. I’m not speaking out of frustration or disappointment, but because I genuinely care about Czech football,” wrote the Bayer Leverkusen striker in a message shared online.
Schick further explained that his decision was not made in haste, but rather after careful consideration. He stated that stepping away from the national team feels like the right move at this stage of his career. He concluded his farewell message by saying, “It was an honour to wear the Czech jersey.”
