Chaturmas 2026 Start Date: Chaturmas begins on Devshayani Ekadashi, which falls on the Ekadashi tithi (eleventh day) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Ashadha month. Devshayani Ekadashi marks the first day of Chaturmas. No auspicious ceremonies take place during Chaturmas; consequently, events such as weddings, engagements, housewarming ceremonies, and tonsure rituals are not performed for these four months. Chaturmas concludes on Devutthana Ekadashi, after which auspicious activities resume. Let us find out when Chaturmas begins.
Start of Chaturmas 2026
According to the Vedic almanac (Panchang), the Ashadha Shukla Ekadashi tithi begins at 09:12 AM on Friday, July 24. This tithi continues until 11:34 AM on Saturday, July 25. Based on the *Udaya Tithi* (the sunrise tithi), Devshayani Ekadashi falls on July 25; therefore, Chaturmas will commence on July 25.
Which months are included in Chaturmas?
The period of Chaturmas encompasses the days from Ekadashi to Purnima (full moon) of the Ashadha month. This is followed by the months of Shravana, Bhadrapada, Ashvina, and Kartika.
Conclusion of Chaturmas 2026
According to the Hindu calendar, Chaturmas concludes on Devutthana Ekadashi (also known as Dev-Utthan Ekadashi). Devutthana Ekadashi falls on the Ekadashi tithi of the bright fortnight of Kartika (Kartika Shukla Ekadashi). According to the Vedic almanac, the Kartika Shukla Ekadashi tithi this year will last from 7:15 AM on November 20 until 6:31 AM on November 21. Since Devutthana Ekadashi falls on November 20, Chaturmas will conclude on Friday, November 20.
Why are auspicious activities suspended during Chaturmas?
On the first day of Chaturmas, Lord Shri Hari Vishnu—the Preserver of the Universe—enters a state of *Yog Nidra* (divine slumber) in *Patala Loka* (the netherworld). From this day onwards, the gods and goddesses go into a slumber; they remain asleep for four months. When Lord Vishnu emerges from his *Yog Nidra* (cosmic sleep) on Dev Uthani Ekadashi, all the deities also awaken. Since the deities must be awake for any auspicious activity to take place, auspicious ceremonies such as weddings, housewarming rituals, *Mundan* (tonsure ceremonies), engagements, and *Janeu* (sacred thread) ceremonies are suspended during the four months of *Chaturmas*.
