Parents often worry if a child at home cannot speak clearly, has a lisp, or faces difficulties in speaking. They frequently seek various remedies for such children. Ancient scriptures prescribe a specific remedy for this issue, backed by long-standing religious beliefs. It is said that giving children water kept in a *shankh* (conch shell) improves their speech and gradually enhances their speaking ability.
**The Conch Shell is Considered the Brother of Goddess Lakshmi**
Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya explains that the conch shell is associated with the *Samudra Manthan* (Churning of the Ocean). The conch shell emerged from the ocean during the same event that saw the appearance of Goddess Lakshmi; for this reason, it is regarded as her brother. Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya notes that the conch shell possesses various medicinal properties. Scriptures mention that if a child’s voice is unclear, or if they lisp or speak very little, giving them water stored in a conch shell can be beneficial.
**Remedy to Cure a Lisp Using a Conch Shell**
Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya explains the procedure: place the conch shell upright and fill its opening with clean water. Cover the top and allow the water to remain inside the shell for approximately 12 hours. The next morning, pour the water into a glass and give it to the child to drink.
Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya states that doing this daily helps reduce the lisp and makes the child's voice clearer than before. This remedy holds special significance in the scriptures.
**The Conch Shell is Also Highly Significant from a Religious Perspective**
Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya explains that the conch shell is considered vital not only for health-related beliefs but also from a religious standpoint. It holds a special place in the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi. Blowing the conch shell during *Aarti* (ritual prayer) dispels negative energy from the atmosphere and fosters positivity. The *Dakshinavarti* (right-handed) conch shell, in particular, is considered highly auspicious, and there is a prescribed ritual for worshipping Lord Shaligram using it.
**Identifying a Genuine Conch Shell**
Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya explains that there is another unique belief associated with the conch shell: it is considered a living entity. According to religious belief, if a conch shell is buried under a large quantity of rice, it will eventually rise to the surface on its own. This is regarded as a special power of the conch. Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya notes that whether it is buried under 50 kilograms of rice or even more, the conch possesses the ability to surface by itself.
**Do Not Use the Conch Shell in the Worship of Lord Shiva**
Mahant Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya states that while the conch shell should certainly be used in the worship of Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi, it should not be blown during the worship or *Aarti* of Lord Shiva. According to religious legends, blowing the conch during Shiva's worship is prohibited due to beliefs linked to the demon Shankhasura. For this reason, the Sanatan tradition prescribes distinct rules regarding the use of the conch shell in the worship of Lord Shiva versus Lord Vishnu.
