Mateus Fernandes is said to favour a switch to Manchester United, although he would also be open to a move to Tottenham Hotspur, according to reports.
The update comes from Andy Mitten of The Athletic, who discussed the situation during the most recent episode of the Talk of the Devils podcast on YouTube.
Following an impressive campaign with West Ham United last season, the promising young Portuguese midfielder has attracted considerable attention, with a high-profile transfer expected this summer.
Given his talent, Fernandes is unlikely to want to play in the Championship. Reports from the Independent suggest that Tottenham have held positive discussions regarding a potential £85 million deal.
However, Mitten indicated that Fernandes is more inclined towards a move to Manchester United if the opportunity arises. This means the Red Devils will need to act decisively if they wish to secure his signature.
“I’m told that he would play for Spurs, but he’d prefer Manchester United,” Mitten stated.
He further explained: “It comes down to how much Manchester United are prepared to pay. It depends on whether the club are willing to spend that amount. They certainly don’t want to get involved in an auction scenario.”
According to Mitten, West Ham would benefit from an auction-style sale, as it could bring in significant funds to help rebuild their squad and prepare for a push to return to the Premier League.
Realistically, Fernandes leaning towards United over Spurs is hardly surprising given the contrasting fortunes of the two clubs in the 2025/26 season.
Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation on the final day, marking their second consecutive 17th-place finish in the Premier League.
As a result, the north London club will miss out on European football next season, while Manchester United have secured a return to the UEFA Champions League after finishing third.
Under Michael Carrick’s leadership, United appear to be regaining momentum, making Old Trafford an appealing destination. Fernandes may decide it is worth waiting to see if his preferred transfer materialises.
Even if United ultimately decide against meeting West Ham’s asking price for the 21-year-old, Fernandes could afford to remain patient, as better opportunities than Tottenham are likely to arise in the near future.
