Fashion's barefoot obsession

From mesh ballet flats to heel-only runway creations, luxury footwear is entering a new phase of minimalism—one where the shoe itself is beginning to disappear. “Deliberate absence has become the new luxury. It’s about having the confidence to leave things out,” explains fashion psychologist Ruchi Raj.
According to experts, the trend echoes the rise of ‘ naked dressing ’. Ruchi explains, “The trend mirrors the rise of naked dressing, where the body becomes the focal point rather than the outfit itself. Through the lens of enclothed cognition, choosing a barely-there shoe can reflect a sense of self-actualisation. Increasingly, women are dressing for personal expression rather than approval, status, or external validation.”

The rise of barely-there footwear
Recently, Saint Laurent Men’s Spring/Summer 2027 featured a surreal, barely-there take on the classic dress shoe. Meanwhile, Dear Frances introduced the Balla ‘sock shoe’, a transparent mesh design that wraps the foot in what founder Jane Frances described as a ‘glove-like fit’. The trend turns the foot into a focal point rather than something footwear simply covers.
According to fashion influencer Niharika Jain, fashion is currently embracing pieces that feel understated rather than overly loud, and barely-there styles fit perfectly into that shift.
Sharing her thoughts on the trend, Jain says, “Ballet flats have always been timeless and effortlessly versatile, so the rise of barely-there silhouettes feels like a natural evolution—fashion blurring the line between wearability and art.”

"The barely-there shoe trend reflects something deeper than aesthetics. It signals a shift towards confidence, where the wearer isn't relying on the shoe to make a statement—the statement comes from her presence" - Ruchi Raj, a fashion psychologist

"Barefoot ballerinas can easily become everyday staples, while barefoot heels are designed to spark conversation. That balance between wearability and statement-making is what luxury fashion has always done best" - Niharika Jain, a fashion influencer
