Nico Paz to stay put! Como finalise €60m agreement with Real Madrid as La Liga powerhouse secures a higher buy‑back clause

Italian club Como have completed a remarkable transfer move by agreeing to Real Madrid’s €60 million proposal to retain Argentine playmaker Nico Paz. The ambitious Serie A side managed to fend off competition from several top clubs to keep their star midfielder at the lakeside, while the Spanish giants negotiated a much larger buy‑back clause as part of the new arrangement.

Como secure Paz’s future

According to reports from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Como have reached a deal to repurchase Paz from Real Madrid for a hefty fee of €60 million. The Italian outfit acted swiftly to stop Madrid from triggering their original, lower‑priced buy‑back clause before the approaching deadline. This record investment guarantees that the highly rated Argentine midfielder will remain in Como colours for at least another season, spearheading the team as they prepare for their historic maiden appearance in the Champions League.

Talisman commits to the project

At 21, Paz has been an indispensable part of Como’s squad over the past two campaigns. The Argentine scored an impressive 12 Serie A goals last season, helping the club secure qualification for the Champions League. Real Madrid had been expected to activate their clause to bring him back next season, while Inter Milan were reportedly ready to meet Madrid’s premium valuation to sign him this summer. However, Como moved decisively to ensure he continues as a key member of Cesc Fabregas’s team for now.

Madrid retain future control

The intricate negotiations required a complete restructuring of the original deal that took the academy graduate to Italy for just €6 million two years ago. That agreement included a 50% sell‑on clause in Madrid’s favour and incremental buy‑back options across three seasons, with the next €10 million deadline set for the following Tuesday. In an effort to generate funds for new manager Jose Mourinho’s incoming project, Madrid leveraged that clause to secure a fresh €60 million package spread over four annual instalments, while adding a revised €80 million buy‑back option for next summer.

Champions League challenge ahead

Como must now manage this significant financial commitment carefully to remain compliant with Financial Fair Play rules as they assemble a squad capable of competing on multiple fronts. Keeping hold of their brightest talent serves as a huge psychological lift for their passionate fanbase as they prepare for their first‑ever European campaign at the Stadio Sinigaglia. The attention now shifts to the upcoming transfer window, where the club’s management will aim to strengthen the defence to complement Fabregas’s talented midfield group.
