Luis Suarez has called on football fans to stop drawing comparisons between Lamine Yamal and Lionel Messi, emphasising that while the two share certain traits, they are fundamentally different players. The Inter Miami forward lauded the Spanish teenager’s composure under pressure and expressed confidence that he could one day match the extraordinary achievements of the Argentine superstar.
Suarez calls for patience in Yamal-Messi comparisons
Suarez dismissed the ongoing comparisons between Yamal and Messi, explaining that they are “completely different players” even though both emerged from Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy as left-footed attacking talents. The former Barcelona striker acknowledged Yamal’s remarkable potential but cautioned against burdening the 18-year-old with undue expectations. Instead, Suarez expressed hope that the Spanish international would eventually reach the remarkable heights Messi has maintained throughout his illustrious career.
Suarez praises Yamal while upholding Messi’s legacy
Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, Suarez elaborated on why he feels such comparisons benefit neither player. While recognising that both share exceptional technical ability, he insisted that their journeys should be evaluated separately.
“Comparisons are odious,” Suarez remarked. “They’re different players. Yes, they both have a superb left foot and similar quality, but they’re completely different players. The results speak for themselves, and look at what Leo continues to accomplish at his age. Let’s hope Lamine can reach at least that same level.”
Suarez also highlighted Yamal’s increasing influence for Spain, saying: “In the first match against Cape Verde, Spain dominated possession but lacked clear scoring chances, apart from Ferran’s opportunity in the first half. When Lamine came on, the difference was clear — his teammates immediately sought him out, passing the ball to him, and you could sense something was about to happen — a cross, a run down the flank, a shot, anything. He drew more attention from defenders.”
He continued, “He’s a player who has been improving throughout the World Cup. Lamine knows the spotlight is on him, even though other exceptional players are shining at the tournament. He’s aware of it and is handling the pressure very well.”
Messi’s mindset remains unmatched
Suarez believes that Messi’s longevity is driven as much by his mentality as by his footballing skill. The Uruguayan forward praised his Inter Miami teammate’s relentless determination, recalling how Messi prepared for the World Cup and how he continues to silence critics even at this stage of his career.
“I’ve been training with him here for a while now, and I’ve seen how he prepared for this World Cup,” Suarez explained. “Many people speculated that he was getting old. But Leo still possesses that fierce hunger to remain the best and to keep competing. The other day was another example of his incredible mental strength.”
“He missed a penalty just four or five minutes into the match, yet he kept pushing. Imagine if he’d lost confidence and Argentina’s morale had dropped — that would have shown weakness. Instead, he lifted himself, kept fighting, and went on to score two goals.”
Suarez also dismissed claims that he and Messi have taken things lightly since moving to Inter Miami.
“Leo still has the same desire to play and compete,” he said. “People often ask us why we still get angry in training. It’s because that’s who we are — that competitive fire has been with us since childhood, and it won’t fade until we retire. What’s clear now is his professionalism, and that of every player in the United States who continues to perform at the World Cup.”
Yamal’s rising expectations
Yamal continues to shoulder increasing expectations after establishing himself as a central figure in Spain’s attack. During the 2026 World Cup, the Barcelona youngster scored once and played a vital role in helping Spain progress to the knockout stages. La Roja are now preparing for their Round of 32 clash at Los Angeles Stadium on July 2.
