Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg has provided an important update on Manchester United’s strong pursuit of West Ham United’s rising star, Mateus Fernandes.
The Red Devils have identified the Portuguese midfielder as one of their top transfer priorities, with manager Michael Carrick eager to revamp the midfield ahead of the 2026/27 season.
Plettenberg revealed that Manchester United are deeply engaged in negotiations to secure the signature of the 21-year-old talent, describing the club’s stance as fully “determined” to complete the move without hesitation.
According to his report, personal terms between Fernandes and Manchester United have already been agreed upon, eliminating any potential obstacle on the player’s side.
Fernandes is said to be keen on joining the Old Trafford side, largely attracted by the prospect of playing UEFA Champions League football under Carrick’s management—a major incentive in the transfer.
With the player’s approval secured, the remaining challenge lies in reaching an agreement between the two clubs. West Ham United, following their relegation to the Championship, have placed a hefty £85 million valuation on Fernandes. Although United’s initial offers are expected to fall below that figure, insiders at the club continue to stress that completing this transfer is a key objective.
Nonetheless, Manchester United are not alone in the race. Premier League rivals Tottenham Hotspur are also making a push for Fernandes’s signature. Under the guidance of new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs are prepared to challenge United and have reportedly shown willingness to meet West Ham’s £85 million asking price.
The North London club are capable of offering a competitive salary package to entice the midfielder, with their management prioritising the strengthening of their midfield as a central target this summer.
Reports indicate that Tottenham have also made significant progress, having already held ‘positive’ discussions with Fernandes. However, their absence from elite European competitions could hinder their efforts, especially given their disappointing league campaigns in recent seasons.
Despite Tottenham’s active interest, Fernandes is understood to prefer a move to Manchester United. The allure of joining a club steeped in history and competing at the highest level of European football seems to have tilted the balance in United’s favour.
While Spurs remain in contention and continue to apply pressure, Manchester United believe they are in the strongest position to finalise the transfer—largely due to the player’s personal desire to don the iconic red shirt next season.
