Not every player who departs from Manchester United finds success elsewhere, but Scott McTominay has certainly flourished since leaving Old Trafford.
In his debut season with Napoli, the Scottish midfielder captured the Serie A title and was also named the league’s Most Valuable Player. To add to his achievements, McTominay finished 18th in the Ballon d’Or rankings that year.
Although the following season did not reach the same heights, the 29-year-old maintained his impressive form, scoring 14 goals across all competitions and contributing four assists.
As expected, speculation has surfaced regarding a possible return to Manchester United, with several top clubs, including Real Madrid, showing interest in the midfielder.
According to reports from TuttoMercatoWeb, former United manager Jose Mourinho is eager to reunite with McTominay, whom he once mentored during his time at Old Trafford.
Mourinho was the man who handed McTominay his senior debut for Manchester United, a gesture that has stayed with the Scotland international ever since.
“Jose is very special to me. He still keeps in contact with me now and checks in after some of my games,” McTominay had said in an interview back in 2019.
Given their relationship, it would be natural to assume that the Carrington academy graduate might consider a move to Madrid if such an opportunity arose. However, Napoli have their own plans for the midfielder.
The Italian club are currently in negotiations with McTominay over a contract extension and have reportedly placed a €80 million valuation on the 6ft 3in star.
“Once his commitments in the United States are complete, McTominay is expected to take a short break before joining Napoli’s training camp in Castel di Sangro.
“Meanwhile, the matter of his contract renewal remains unresolved. As reported in today’s edition of Corriere del Mezzogiorno (Naples edition), discussions to extend his contract beyond 2028 have been ongoing for months, yet no final agreement has been reached.
“Real Madrid have also made initial enquiries regarding the midfielder, but Napoli’s stance is firm: they will only consider letting one of their key players leave if they receive an offer of at least €80 million. This valuation effectively rules out any short-term transfer.”
Napoli are determined to make McTominay a central figure in their long-term project, and it remains to be seen how Mourinho and Real Madrid respond if they are serious about pursuing him.
Manchester United, meanwhile, inserted a 10% sell-on clause in McTominay’s transfer to Napoli, meaning the Premier League club could benefit significantly if Real Madrid were to meet the Italian side’s asking price.
