Florida Man Held for Posing as Police After Attempting to Stop an Unmarked Patrol Car, Say Officials

There are poor choices, and then there are decisions so remarkably reckless that they defy belief. As per the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office in Florida, a man seems to have discovered this the hard way after allegedly trying to perform a fake traffic stop on an undercover sheriff’s vehicle.

The incident took place on June 24, when authorities reported that a black Chevrolet Suburban activated red and blue emergency lights while following another vehicle on U.S. Highway 301 North in Thonotosassa, Florida. The Suburban appeared to be initiating a traffic stop. However, the driver—identified by police as 46-year-old Nadi Jabar—was not a law enforcement officer, and the vehicle he tried to pull over was, in fact, an undercover sheriff’s car. Unsurprisingly, this misstep did not end favourably for Jabar.

Deputies stopped the Suburban and, upon inspection, discovered an illegal emergency light system, an additional two-foot emergency light bar, and a firearm that, based on photos released by the sheriff’s office, appears to be a Sig Sauer pistol. Jabar was taken into custody and charged with false personation, unlawful use of blue lights, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Body camera footage revealed that there was at least one other occupant in the Suburban with Jabar at the time. Authorities did not announce any further arrests or charges but stated that the investigation remains ongoing as of June 25.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister was direct in his remarks following the arrest, stating that individuals who impersonate police officers endanger innocent motorists and erode public confidence in legitimate law enforcement personnel. He emphasised that fake traffic stops are not harmless pranks but serious offences that can have dangerous outcomes.

Officials advise that if you are ever uncertain about the authenticity of a traffic stop, it is best to slow down, proceed to a well-lit public area, and contact 911 to confirm whether the person attempting to stop you is a genuine police officer. In this incident, however, the impersonator mistakenly chose the worst possible vehicle to target.
