‘Makes me feel sick’: Netherlands slammed for ‘foolish’ penalty shootout blunders as Morocco crush their 2026 World Cup hopes

The Netherlands crashed out of the 2026 World Cup in heartbreaking fashion after a 3-2 penalty shootout defeat to Morocco following a tense 1-1 draw. Former Dutch star Pierre van Hooijdonk fiercely criticised Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber, and Crysencio Summerville for their ‘foolish’ penalty run-ups, admitting that their disastrous execution made him feel physically sick.

Netherlands legends condemn wasteful penalties

Speaking to Dutch broadcaster NOS, Van Hooijdonk expressed disbelief at how the Oranje collapsed from the spot in Monterrey. After a draining 1-1 draw, Kluivert struck the post, Timber sent his effort wide, and Yassine Bounou saved Summerville’s tame attempt to seal a 3-2 shootout win for the Atlas Lions.

Fellow analyst Ibrahim Afellay echoed the frustration, suggesting that today’s international stars struggle to handle the intense psychological burden of major tournament shootouts. The painful loss represents the Netherlands’ earliest World Cup exit in the modern era, leaving supporters heartbroken as their dream of global glory disintegrated dramatically.

Van Hooijdonk calls for a return to traditional penalty taking

Van Hooijdonk refused to attribute the collapse merely to pressure, instead blaming the unnecessary complexity of modern penalty routines. He remarked, “Pressure is something you cannot train for, but our national team coach took 1,423 penalties during his playing career and scored all of them without any theatrics.”

Urging Ronald Koeman to restore simplicity, he added, “Place the ball, take your run-up, and strike it. I’d expect the coach to tell the players: ‘You can miss, but only in one way — with a normal run-up and a clean shot.’ All these ridiculous antics make me feel sick to my stomach.”

Outplayed Oranje lucky to reach penalties

The analysis turned even more critical as both pundits admitted that Morocco were the superior side throughout. Afellay stated, “It’s a miracle that the Netherlands even reached the shootout,” acknowledging the team’s struggles across the match. Van Hooijdonk wholeheartedly agreed, saying Morocco were “two classes better.”

He also questioned Koeman’s tactical approach: “Beforehand we thought the ideas were good, but when it doesn’t work, you must adapt. Morocco are a strong side, but they’re not France. Yet we played as if we were facing France.”

Koeman’s future in doubt after humiliating exit

Following this humiliating tactical collapse, Ronald Koeman’s position as manager looks increasingly uncertain. The Royal Dutch Football Association is expected to conduct a full review of the team’s defensive strategies and mental resilience before the upcoming European Championship qualifiers. With fans demanding immediate reform, the Netherlands must rediscover their footballing identity to ensure this talented generation does not go to waste on the international stage once again.
