Marcus Rashford appears set for a remarkable return to Manchester United, as reported by respected journalists David Ornstein and Fabrizio Romano.
Barcelona’s decision not to exercise their option to sign Rashford permanently has cast significant uncertainty over his future.
During his loan spell with Barcelona in the 2025/26 season, Rashford delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 14 goals and providing 14 assists in all competitions. His contributions played a key role in helping the Catalan club retain their La Liga crown.
Barcelona had the opportunity to secure Rashford on a permanent transfer for £26 million but opted against doing so. Instead, they expressed interest in either paying half that amount or arranging another season-long loan. Manchester United, however, made it clear that no new negotiations would take place.
With the June 15 deadline for activating Rashford’s purchase clause now expired, a long-term stay at Camp Nou seems highly improbable.
The England international has since attracted attention from clubs such as Aston Villa, Bayern Munich, and Tottenham Hotspur.
David Ornstein of The Athletic has now revealed that Manchester United have begun talks with Rashford’s representatives about a possible return. Although it once appeared that his Old Trafford career was over, recent developments suggest a shift in direction.
Ornstein wrote, “The England forward is expected to rejoin the first-team group for pre-season training next month and, as things stand, will be available for Carrick to utilise.”
He further added, “The situation remains fluid because no final decision has been made yet. Nevertheless, there is a collective willingness to explore reintegration.”
“United wish to avoid a third loan while Barcelona have no plans for a permanent deal. The 28-year-old, who is under contract until 2028, has no interest in moving to another Premier League side and currently has no offers from clubs that would persuade him to leave United.”
Fabrizio Romano confirmed this development, stating, “Manchester United had direct contact with Rashford’s camp — friendly discussions with #MUFC.”
He added, “Man Utd are open to welcoming Rashford back into training, and Marcus is ready to begin pre-season under Carrick. There is no guarantee he will stay, as potential offers may be reviewed later, but this marks an important step in rebuilding trust.”
Rashford had previously been excluded from the first-team setup after falling out of favour with former manager Ruben Amorim. It has been repeatedly emphasised that the decision was made at the club level rather than solely by Amorim. However, manager Michael Carrick now seems eager to work with the forward again.
