Sandro Tonali looks set to move closer to a high-profile transfer from Newcastle United, with Tottenham Hotspur intensifying their pursuit of the Italian midfielder. The north London club is reportedly ready to push financial boundaries to bring the Italy international to their ranks, with personal terms already agreed.
Tottenham ready record-breaking bid
Tottenham are increasingly optimistic about completing the signing of Tonali, as they edge nearer to meeting Newcastle United’s steep valuation. The Magpies have remained steadfast in their stance, but reports from Sky Sport Italy indicate that Spurs are now prepared to table an offer approaching £100 million.
Newcastle had earlier turned down an £80 million proposal, but the opportunity to secure a significant profit on the player they bought from AC Milan for £60 million in 2023 is proving increasingly tempting. Under the guidance of Roberto De Zerbi, Tottenham have identified Tonali as a key component for their midfield rebuild ahead of the new Premier League season.
Personal terms and contract details finalised
While negotiations continue between the two clubs, Tonali’s side of the agreement appears to be finalised. The midfielder has agreed to a six-year deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, which would see him pocket a weekly wage of £275,000.
The proposed deal includes considerable additional costs, as his agency, GR Sports, is expected to receive a 10% commission based on the final transfer fee. This substantial outlay reflects De Zerbi’s determination to reunite with his compatriot, having maintained a close working relationship with Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso.
Manchester City join the competition
However, Tottenham’s path to the Italian star may not be straightforward. Manchester City have now entered the race, with new manager Enzo Maresca reportedly keen to inject fresh energy into his FA Cup and League Cup double-winning squad. According to Chronicle Live, City view Tonali as a serious target, considering him as a long-term replacement for Bernardo Silva—who recently joined Real Madrid—or as additional depth for Rodri.
City’s financial power is widely recognised, and after spending £116 million on Elliot Anderson earlier this summer, they are fully capable of matching any bid Spurs present. Tonali has long been admired at the Etihad since Pep Guardiola’s tenure, and the allure of joining the reigning Premier League champions might yet sway his decision.
Agent’s comments and Newcastle’s position
Tonali’s representative, Giuseppe Riso, has previously spoken openly about the midfielder’s potential move to a major European side. In March, Riso remarked: “Exactly, that was the goal from the moment he went to England – to make him a top-level player. I believe he’s among the most valuable Italian footballers globally. The transfer happened because Newcastle, with their vast financial resources, chose to invest in Sandro. We considered it an opportunity for him to perform in an elite league.”
Newcastle’s Chief Executive Officer, David Hopkinson, also touched on the issue of potential player exits earlier in the year. He commented: “We assess what our players might want to do during the summer. But if a scenario similar to Isak’s arises again, any player under contract will depart on our terms, ensuring the club benefits to the fullest extent possible.”
