Fabrizio Romano has reported that Tottenham Hotspur have agreed to part ways with one of their defenders, who had personally requested to leave the club this summer, with his transfer fee now confirmed.
The Spurs backline is set for a major transformation ahead of the forthcoming season. The North London club have already secured the signatures of Marcos Senesi, Andy Robertson, and Jan Paul van Hecke, with the latter two expected to feature regularly in the starting line-up.
Tottenham have also finalised the sale of Luka Vuskovic to Brighton & Hove Albion, although the young centre-back had spent the previous campaign on loan. Now, another central defender appears to be making his way out of the club.
According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Radu Dragusin will undergo his medical at Fiorentina early next week following an agreement between the two clubs.
The journalist explained that Tottenham granted Dragusin permission to complete the move after he had ‘asked to leave’ the club.
The Romanian defender is set to join the Serie A side on a season-long loan, which includes an obligation to buy thereafter. The total package, including wages, is reported to be worth £16.5 million.
Dragusin’s departure had been widely anticipated, particularly after he struggled to regain a regular place in the squad upon returning from injury last season. The central defensive positions were firmly occupied by Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero, and Kevin Danso.
Former Tottenham scout Bryan King had previously suggested that the Romanian might be offloaded, potentially to make room for Luka Vuskovic.
King commented, “The one thing they need to consider is letting Dragusin go. They’ll be bringing Vuskovic back, and then they can sell Dragusin.”
Speaking about Vuskovic, he added, “You’d want him back at your club if he’s developing as expected. He will be a valuable asset to bring in and utilise next season.”
Although several reports indicated that Tottenham viewed Vuskovic as a future top-class defender in European football, the club seemingly decided that he was not yet ready to displace their current first-choice options.
Consequently, Tottenham opted to sell Vuskovic after acquiring Senesi and Van Hecke, evidently believing that the new arrivals would provide a more immediate impact than the Croatian international.
If Vuskovic eventually fulfils his potential and becomes a leading defender, the decision could be viewed as a misstep. Nonetheless, Tottenham’s recruitment strategy this summer — which also includes the additions of Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes — clearly indicates an ambition to compete at the highest level right away rather than focusing solely on long-term development.
Dragusin’s impending exit is thus a reflection of the club’s evolving defensive lineup and their ongoing pursuit of short-term success.
