The Mumbai region is currently grappling with severe weather conditions as the meteorological department has issued a 'Red Alert' due to heavy rainfall. Following this warning, local authorities have entered a state of heightened readiness. On Monday, July 6, 2026, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) advised private offices in Mumbai to allow employees to work from home.
Additionally, non-essential government and semi-government offices have been instructed to operate for only half a day.
Work-from-Home Advisory Issued
According to the advisory, private institutions are encouraged to permit employees to work remotely wherever feasible. Meanwhile, government and semi-government employees, except those engaged in essential services, have been granted leave until noon. The SDMA posted on 'X', stating, "In light of the current weather conditions, SDMA has issued directives specifically for Mumbai: Private offices are advised to allow work from home wherever possible, and non-essential government offices will operate for half a day."
Red Alert for Heavy Rainfall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'Red Alert' for Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad districts. The department predicts heavy to very heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The alert was escalated from 'Orange' to 'Red' after observing changes in weather conditions in the morning. Winds are expected to reach speeds of 70-80 km/h in the area.
Warnings of Flash Floods and Landslides
The IMD has warned that intense rainfall could lead to waterlogging in low-lying and urban areas, flash floods, and rising river levels in certain catchment areas, potentially flooding roads and bridges. There are also concerns about weak trees being uprooted, old and poorly maintained buildings collapsing, and landslides, mudslides, and rockfalls occurring in vulnerable regions.
Impact on Transportation and Essential Services
The coastal Konkan region is expected to experience turbulent sea conditions and strong winds. The IMD has indicated that road, rail, air, and ferry services may face disruptions, along with essential civic services such as water and electricity supply.
BMC Urges Residents to Stay Indoors
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged residents to venture outside only when absolutely necessary and to maintain a safe distance from trees, dilapidated buildings, hoardings, power poles, and other vulnerable structures. As a precaution, the civic body has advised against parking vehicles under trees and staying away from beaches and flooded areas.
According to the BMC, approximately 15,000 officials and staff from the municipal body and other government agencies have been deployed across Mumbai, with senior officials continuously monitoring the situation and coordinating emergency response measures.
Stay Informed and Safe
The municipal body has also requested citizens to disregard rumors and rely solely on official guidance issued by the administration and disaster management authorities. Residents are urged to strictly adhere to all safety protocols and to contact the BMC helpline at 1916 for immediate assistance in case of emergencies.
