Hans-Joachim Watzke, the vice president of the German Football Association (DFB), has stated that the appointment of Jürgen Klopp as head coach of the German national football team is not yet finalised.
Speaking to ZDF, Watzke, who previously worked with Klopp at Borussia Dortmund, said, “This is not a done deal yet. There are still hurdles to overcome.”
Watzke elaborated, “Especially considering that he has a contract at RB Leipzig. I am a bit more sceptical than others about the possibility of getting him out of his contract.”
He went on to explain, “I am convinced that the chances are greater than 50%, but that doesn’t mean it’s certain. Jürgen is our Plan A, and we intend to pursue that plan.”
According to Watzke, several issues still need resolution, but Klopp’s openness to addressing them is encouraging. “There are problems that need solving, and Jürgen’s willingness to help resolve them is of great importance. Of course, we have our financial limits,” he added.
Watzke also hinted at hoping for some flexibility from Klopp regarding financial terms. “We expect, or rather I expect, a slight ‘patriotism discount’ from Jürgen in particular. I know that he loves Germany,” Watzke said.
