Mumbai remained in the grip of an intense monsoon spell, with relentless rain disrupting daily life, and triggering widespread waterlogging across several parts of the city. Although the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has downgraded its warning from a Red Alert to an Orange Alert for Mumbai, authorities have cautioned that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue, urging residents to avoid non-essential travel.
The heavy downpour has severely affected road and rail transport across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Local train services have experienced delays due to waterlogged tracks, while several roads remained inundated, leading to traffic snarls during peak hours. Civic authorities have deployed thousands of emergency personnel to deal with flooding, fallen trees and other rain-related incidents. The ongoing spell has also proved deadly.
Rainfall has also disrupted services on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai rail corridor, while parts of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway witnessed disruptions due to landslides and water accumulation before traffic was gradually restored.
While Mumbai grapples with flooding, Delhi is preparing for another wet spell as the southwest monsoon continues to strengthen over northern India. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and moderate to heavy rainfall over the national capital through the week. Rain activity is expected to intensify during the afternoon and evening hours on Tuesday, bringing relief from the recent humid conditions but also increasing the risk of waterlogging in low-lying areas.
The weather department has indicated that Delhi could receive isolated heavy rainfall between July 7 and July 9. Gusty winds during thunderstorms may temporarily affect visibility and traffic conditions, prompting authorities to advise commuters to plan their journeys accordingly.
The southwest monsoon is also continuing its advance. Conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to progress further into more parts of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab and the North Arabian Sea during the next three days, bringing the seasonal rains closer to covering the entire country.
For Tuesday, the IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places over Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Coastal Karnataka, Vidarbha and West Madhya Pradesh. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is also expected over East Madhya Pradesh, East Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Interior Karnataka, Marathwada, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim.
Heavy rainfall is likely over several other regions, including Assam and Meghalaya, Jharkhand, Odisha, Kerala, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir, West Uttar Pradesh and the northeastern states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.
Apart from heavy rain, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are expected across many parts of the country. Karnataka and Telangana are likely to witness the strongest thunderstorms, with wind speeds reaching 50 to 70 kmph at isolated places. Thunderstorms with gusty winds of 40 to 50 kmph are also expected over Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Gangetic West Bengal, Jammu and Kashmir and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
The IMD has also issued marine warnings for fishermen. Strong squally winds are expected over large parts of the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, with wind speeds reaching up to 80 kmph over parts of the Arabian Sea. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the northwest Bay of Bengal, along the Odisha and West Bengal coasts, as well as adjoining parts of the Arabian Sea until weather conditions improve.
In addition, a moderate flash flood risk has been forecast for several districts across Gujarat, Konkan and Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Saurashtra and Kutch, and parts of east and west Madhya Pradesh during the next 24 hours. The weather department has warned of possible waterlogging, localised flooding, inundation of low-lying areas and increased surface runoff in these regions.
The IMD has urged residents in affected states to remain vigilant, monitor local weather updates and follow advisories issued by local authorities. People living in flood-prone areas have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged roads and overflowing drains, and exercise caution during thunderstorms.
