Karan Johar, the name which revolves around film making, controversial shows and fashion had spent years through a series of scrutiny, judgements and criticisms over his appearance and body.
He had fought body dysmorphia and undergone a physical transformation that many people found inspiring and for many it's again a birth ground of controversies.
Karan Johar followed a number of disciplined steps that helped the 54-year-old director and producer to burn fat and shed more than a few pounds.
In an interview with GQ, Karan’s trainer Kunal Gir had given an insight of his fitness routine. Here are details of his transformation.
Use of ozempicKaran has slapped all the rumours of him using Ozempic. It is a kind of drug that leads to weight loss. In Figuring Out With Raj Shamani, Karan had talked about this buzz and denied it saying if he would have used it, probably he would have monetised it as well.
"I have always been battling the bulge. I have tried a thousand different diets and five hundred workouts. Nothing worked. After years of combatting it, I did some blood tests and realised the issues I had, with my thyroid, etc. Now people keep asking me 'Are you on Ozempic, Mounjaro?' and I am tired of it. They have no idea about the truth, and I don't want to share it.”
Ranbir Kapoor as an inspirationBut what his trainer Gir revealed was that, Ranbir Kapoor who is very dear to Karan had suggested that he move forward to lose weight. But Karan was under a lot of stress at that time (2017) as he became the father to his twins, Yash and Roohi, via surrogacy.
"But now that he has his babies, suddenly he realised that he has to take care of his health,” Gir told GQ. It was Ranbir Kapoor who had motivated him by his own weight loss. Since Kapoor is a big foodie and isn't exactly the typical poster boy for fitness, Gir says that Johar was even more inspired by the change his friend underwent.
How to lose weight by workoutsHis fitness regime always had a day of pool workout. "The pool workout is my idea," says Gir.
"He likes water. Water calms him down." The fitness trainer said that he planned three weight training sessions for his client along with one pool session, giving him something to look forward to. Johar's weight training sessions were usually short and intense as revealed by him.
Karan under the supervision of Gir used to do cardio for six minutes out of the total 30 that Karan's workout routine comprised.
Karan's special weightloss dietAccording to his trainer, Karan had cut mostly on carbs and sugar. Both the things if consumed in excess levels can cause fat gaining. Hence he followed a diet that was heavily based on proteins and vegetables.
"He responds better to a high vegetable diet," says Gir. Before deciding the exact diet, Gir and Karan both took some time to decide what was best for them. Although Keto seemed a little approachable, he followed something that was not keto but was almost a similar version of it.
Karan mainly followed the OMAD lifestyle. OMAD stands for One Meal A Day. It is an extreme form of intermittent fasting where the eating window in this meal is just limited to one meal in 24 hours.
It meant that he was having a lot more proteins than fat, i.e. 70 percent protein and 30 percent fat. For the good fat that Karan needed, Gir made sure to incorporate an intake of food made in macadamia nut oil and asked his client to eat raw nuts and flax seeds.
Flexible exercises were another plus factor that were added besides his diet.
