Mumbai's Powai Lake is becoming this monsoon's most unexpected wildlife attraction, thanks to the Mugger crocodiles emerging after heavy rains

As per local reports, a seven-foot crocodile was rescued on Tuesday morning. Panic spread in Mumbai's Morarji Nagar after a crocodile was spotted in the region and fear spread among residents. The forest department was informed and a team arrived with trained rescuers.

Not many must be aware of the fact that the lake was built in 1891 during British rule. It was constructed to supply drinking water to Bombay before newer reservoirs took over and today, although the water is no longer used for drinking, the lake remains an important ecological landmark.

Many visitors are surprised to see that crocodiles have lived in Powai Lake for years. The lake is home to the Indian marsh crocodile, or mugger crocodile. It is a protected species under India's Wildlife Protection Act. A Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation census recorded at least 18 crocodiles in the lake.
However, it is strongly advised to admire the animals only from a safe distance. Attempting selfies with crocodiles can be dangerous.
