Fulham have officially unveiled former Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa as their new head coach, marking the beginning of a new era for the west London club. The Spaniard takes charge at Craven Cottage following Marco Silva’s departure to Portuguese giants Benfica.
A new chapter begins at Craven Cottage
The Premier League side moved quickly to finalise the appointment, announcing that Arbeloa has agreed to a three-year deal to lead the team. The 43-year-old, who last season commanded the sidelines at the Santiago Bernabeu, represents an ambitious choice by Fulham as they aim to strengthen the progress achieved over the past five years.
Sharing his enthusiasm for the opportunity, Arbeloa told the club’s official website: “It is a true honour for me to begin this new chapter with Fulham FC, the oldest club in London. I feel a deep sense of responsibility and great gratitude to Mr [Sahid] Khan and Tony Khan for their faith in me as Fulham’s manager in the Premier League.”
He added: “I am eagerly looking forward to feeling the atmosphere at Craven Cottage with the Fulham supporters and starting pre-season training with the squad next week. I am confident we will have a fantastic journey together. Come on Fulham!”
The search for Silva’s replacement
Fulham’s managerial vacancy emerged after Marco Silva opted to return to his native Portugal to take charge of Benfica. Despite the club’s efforts to retain him following a productive five-year spell, the allure of managing one of Portugal’s top clubs was decisive. The search for his successor involved several notable names, including former Tottenham boss Thomas Frank.
The club also explored the possibility of hiring former Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna, but the financial demands to secure his services were considered excessive. Arbeloa quickly became the leading candidate after impressing the club’s hierarchy with his strategic vision. According to the BBC, his candidacy gained further weight through strong endorsements from Real Madrid president Florentino Perez and Jose Mourinho, who succeeded him at the Spanish club.
Khan praises the ambitious appointment
Club chairman Shahid Khan expressed confidence that Fulham have appointed a leader with a clear understanding of top-level football. Commenting on the appointment, Khan stated: “Alvaro is, by his own admission, very ambitious. He has spent valuable time learning from some of the best players, clubs and methods in world football, experiences that will undoubtedly benefit him here at Fulham.”
Khan further highlighted Arbeloa’s dedication to youth development as a key factor in the decision: “Alvaro has shown a strong interest in our academy and a belief in providing opportunities for young talents. I was delighted to hear that, along with his commitment to attacking football. These qualities make Alvaro Arbeloa the ideal figure to guide Fulham Football Club into the upcoming Premier League season and beyond.”
Real Madrid pedigree comes to London
Arbeloa’s arrival marks his return to English football after previously playing for Liverpool and West Ham United. His managerial career took off at Real Madrid, where he initially worked with the youth set-up before taking over the senior team for the final 28 matches of last season. Under his leadership, Los Blancos secured a second-place finish in La Liga and progressed to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League, where they were eventually knocked out by Bayern Munich.
