Tensions rise in France squad as PSG’s Warren Zaire-Emery grows restless over limited World Cup game time

France may be enjoying a seamless run at the World Cup, but reports suggest that all is not entirely smooth within the Les Bleus camp. Despite their flawless progress to the quarter-finals, speculation indicates that one of Didier Deschamps’ most promising young players is reaching his limit due to a lack of playing opportunities in North America.

Internal unease ahead of Morocco encounter

As France gear up for a crucial quarter-final clash with Morocco following their hard-fought 1-0 win over Paraguay in Philadelphia, attention has reportedly shifted from the pitch to the bench. According to Get French Football News, Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Warren Zaire-Emery is becoming “increasingly frustrated” by his minimal involvement in the tournament thus far.

The 20-year-old was widely expected to play an important role for the reigning world champions after an impressive season at club level. However, he has found himself sidelined throughout France’s campaign. Reports suggest Zaire-Emery is “struggling” to handle the situation and is “bewildered” by his omission, particularly given his exceptional form for PSG. Despite France’s unbeaten run, the midfielder has not played a single minute across five matches.

In sharp contrast to his PSG prominence

The source of Zaire-Emery’s frustration lies in his standing at Paris Saint-Germain. Playing for a star-studded side that captured back-to-back UEFA Champions League titles, the youngster featured in 54 matches across competitions and was a key figure under Luis Enrique. His adaptability and composure made him indispensable at the Parc des Princes, making his marginalised role in the French national team even more difficult to understand.

His club coach, Luis Enrique, has consistently praised the midfielder’s talent. Back in February, he described Zaire-Emery as a “wonderful” player, adding: “Warren has changed, but it’s not because of me—it’s thanks to him. He’s an incredible player who can play anywhere. For me, as a coach, it’s wonderful to have a player like him.”

Deschamps faces a midfield dilemma

Didier Deschamps has primarily relied on Manu Kone and Adrien Rabiot to anchor France’s midfield, especially in the absence of Aurelien Tchouameni. Meanwhile, PSG teammates Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue, and Ousmane Dembele have all enjoyed regular minutes in attack, leaving Zaire-Emery as the outlier. His exclusion even as a substitute during the physically demanding match against Paraguay has reportedly deepened his sense of exclusion within the group.

The situation becomes more significant given the ongoing injury concerns surrounding Tchouameni, who is battling a thigh problem that could rule him out of the quarter-final. The Real Madrid midfielder missed the Paraguay clash due to the issue, yet Deschamps opted to continue with Kone and Rabiot in the centre of the park. This tactical decision has apparently left Zaire-Emery questioning his standing in the squad hierarchy as the competition intensifies.

A potential turning point?

It is understood that Zaire-Emery has already discussed his concerns with members of the French coaching staff. While there is no indication of any disruptive behaviour or tension that might affect team unity, he has clearly communicated his feelings ahead of the Morocco showdown. Nonetheless, his opportunity to feature could soon arise, albeit due to circumstance rather than strategy. With ongoing doubts over Tchouameni’s fitness, Zaire-Emery remains prepared to finally make his mark at this World Cup.
