FIFA has decided to appoint an entirely Argentine team of referees for France’s World Cup quarter-final clash with Morocco. The match, to be held tomorrow night at Boston Stadium, will be officiated by 44-year-old Facundo Tello. This marks the first occasion in the tournament where all match officials hail from a single nation.
The decision has sparked some discussion, given the ongoing sporting rivalry between Argentina and France following Les Bleus’ penalty shootout defeat to Lionel Scaloni’s side in the 2022 World Cup final. Despite this, the French squad has chosen not to dwell on the matter, instead expressing confidence in Tello’s professionalism and experience. “I’m not going to focus on who the referee will be,” said defender Dayot Upamecano. “We’ve never done that before; our attention is on Morocco.”
Third-choice goalkeeper Robin Risser shared similar sentiments, urging his teammates to stay composed and avoid unnecessary speculation. “There’s been a certain bitterness lingering since the last final, but that’s just part of football,” he stated. “If these referees have been appointed, it’s because they have proven themselves to be at the right level for a competition like the World Cup.”
