Serie A club AC Milan have appointed Ruben Amorim as their new manager, with the Portuguese tactician replacing Massimiliano Allegri only a few months after being dismissed by Manchester United.

Amorim’s time at Old Trafford never truly took off. His spell in charge became symbolic of his rigidity as a coach, as he struggled to adjust both to the squad’s dynamics and the culture of the club.

During his first press conference as Milan manager, Amorim spoke candidly about his experience at Manchester United, admitting that he made some errors during his tenure in England.

He explained, via Sportmediaset: “It’s difficult to explain the mistakes; I should explain the context. I learned, I learned a lot. I made mistakes, but I’m proud to have been at United. But now that’s another story.”

Amorim also shed light on what convinced him to join the Rossoneri, describing how the club’s vision and structure resonated with him.

“After the first meeting, something clicked in me. The team offered me things I liked, and I wanted to uphold those values. I was introduced to the structure and the scouting process. When you feel like you have the right people around you, when there’s a team around you, then all the ingredients for the challenge I want to take on are there.”

The Portuguese manager further emphasised his sense of duty to elevate Milan back to the top.

“I remember Ancelotti, I also watched Sacchi a lot, his style brought so many innovations to football. Not to mention Capello. Milan’s past is the whole ensemble of players, from Van Basten to Gullit. If I had to choose just one memory, it would be very difficult. I’ve followed them since I was young. I feel this responsibility.”

In terms of prestige and national significance, Milan stand on a level comparable to Manchester United. Amorim cannot afford to repeat the same mistakes at a club of such magnitude; adaptability will be key to his success in meeting the expectations of one of football’s great institutions.

That adaptability will be essential, especially as the club faces off-field challenges. Amorim will need to excel in man-management during trying times and adjust his tactical approach to suit an imperfect squad. His ability to evolve as a manager could define his success at the San Siro.
