Brian Henderson has spoken about the severe arm injury his son, England midfielder Jordan Henderson, sustained during the team’s thrilling 3-2 win over Mexico in the World Cup. Despite undergoing surgery and being fitted with a cast after tumbling over advertising boards in the midst of jubilant post-match celebrations, the Liverpool stalwart has vowed to remain with the England squad for the remainder of the tournament.
England’s celebrations were dampened by an unexpected accident during their 3-2 triumph over Mexico, which secured their place in the World Cup quarter-finals. The incident occurred at the iconic Azteca Stadium, where Henderson, who had played only 12 minutes in the tournament so far as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Panama, fell awkwardly during the team’s celebrations. The situation quickly turned serious as he was carried off on a stretcher while receiving oxygen.
Speaking to Mail Online, Brian Henderson detailed the extent of his son’s injury. “It’s his left forearm – he’s just completely smashed it. He’s going to have a cast on and then it depends on what the experts say. He won’t be leaving his team-mates. He’ll be there until it’s finished,” he said, reaffirming Jordan’s commitment to the national side despite his setback.
Back in the United Kingdom, Brian Henderson admitted he initially underestimated how severe the fall was. With television cameras failing to capture the full incident, he had to rely on updates from afar. He described spending anxious hours waiting for news from medical staff, who arranged for a specialist surgeon with experience treating NFL players to assess Jordan’s condition.
“At first I just thought he’d fallen. I thought he’d maybe scraped his wrist. I had no idea it was that serious until they were interviewing Harry Kane and a trolley came past with Jordan on it. I could see him on there with oxygen and things. Straight away, I messaged his PA, who was over there, to try and find out what had happened. I was up all night waiting to hear the news. It’s just a waiting game now,” Brian recalled.
While the England team returned to their training base in Kansas City to continue preparations for upcoming fixtures, Henderson stayed behind in Mexico City to undergo surgery on the broken bone. A widely circulated video clip later emerged online, capturing the exact moment he suffered the unfortunate fall as players celebrated their dramatic win.
Despite the painful injury and the abrupt end to his on-field participation, Henderson maintained a positive outlook. Addressing fans on Tuesday, he shared his thoughts: “A night to remember that’s for sure! What an incredible performance against all the different challenges. So proud to be a part of this special team. Thanks for all the support, another big one Saturday.”
Henderson will now focus on his recovery while continuing to support England from the sidelines. Manager Thomas Tuchel and his squad are preparing for a crucial quarter-final clash against Norway on Saturday. The Scandinavian side shocked the football world by defeating Brazil 2-1, with Erling Haaland scoring both goals. The prolific striker has now netted seven times in this World Cup, posing a formidable challenge to the Three Lions’ defence.
