Ruben Amorim has openly acknowledged making several mistakes during his challenging 14-month spell as the manager of Manchester United. Speaking at his first press conference after being appointed as the new head coach of AC Milan, the Portuguese tactician reflected on his time in the Premier League, admitting that the difficulties he faced at Old Trafford provided valuable lessons for his future managerial career.

Reflecting on his Old Trafford struggles

Amorim spoke frankly about his brief stint at Manchester United, which came to an end when the club dismissed him in January 2026. Having taken charge in November 2024, he found it difficult to impose his footballing philosophy during a tough 14-month period. During his introduction as AC Milan’s new manager, Amorim was asked to revisit his previous experience in England.

"It’s difficult to explain the mistakes because to do that, I would need to explain the full context of that journey," Amorim said. "It’s hard to point out every single mistake. The only thing I can say is that I learned a lot, and yes, I made some mistakes."

Apologising to Manchester United supporters

Amorim also took the opportunity on Wednesday to address the fans he left behind in England. His dismissal came with United sitting sixth in the Premier League table, following widespread criticism of his tactics and his inability to successfully integrate academy players into the first team.

Expressing regret over how his exit transpired, Amorim said, "I didn’t have the opportunity, and I’m sorry for that, to say something to the Manchester United fans. I’m really proud to have been their coach for a year during that time."

A disappointing record in the Premier League

Amorim’s overall record at Manchester United was underwhelming. Across all competitions, he oversaw 63 matches, winning 25, drawing 15, and losing 23. In the Premier League alone, he managed just 15 victories in 47 games, averaging 1.23 points per match — the lowest return for any Manchester United manager in the Premier League era.

Despite the setbacks, Amorim remains positive about his future. "Everyone learns from their experience," he reiterated. "I learned a lot. I made some mistakes. There are things I will try to change, and there are some things you never change. But I believe I’ll be a better coach."

Focusing on a new challenge

Amorim now turns his full attention to his new role in Italy, having signed a three-year contract to replace Massimiliano Allegri at AC Milan. The Italian giants have entrusted him with the task of restoring both domestic and European success to San Siro. Amorim will begin preparations with his new squad immediately, eager to apply the tough lessons learned in England to deliver results in Serie A.
