With the World Cup quarterfinals set to kick off on July 9th, France have reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the latest FIFA Rankings, edging past Lionel Messi's Argentina by the narrowest of margins.
Kylian Mbappé was the hero in France's 1–0 Round of 16 victory over Paraguay, converting the decisive penalty and earning Les Bleus 9.26 ranking points. That pushed their total to 1,925.86—enough to leapfrog Argentina, who sit second with 1,925.15 points.
Argentina had entered the tournament as the world's top-ranked side after France's shock group-stage loss to Ivory Coast dropped them to third behind Spain. But with both nations now among the final eight, France's knockout-stage points have flipped the order, giving them a razor-thin lead of just 0.71 points.
Six of Top 10 Still Standing
The quarterfinals have already made history, marking the first time Brazil, Germany, and Italy are all absent at this stage. Despite that, six of the eight remaining teams were ranked inside the top 10 before the tournament.
Argentina (1st), Spain (2nd), France (3rd), England (4th), Morocco (7th), and Belgium (9th) all arrived among the elite. The two surprise entrants are Switzerland (19th) and Norway (31st), who have crashed the party with impressive runs.
