Bruno Guimaraes has officially communicated to Newcastle United that he wishes to leave the club, expressing his clear preference for a move to Arsenal.
The Brazilian midfielder has made it known that he is ready for a new challenge, with the Premier League champions intensifying their pursuit of the player they have long admired.
Arsenal have maintained an interest in Guimaraes for quite some time. Manager Mikel Arteta had previously considered bids for either Guimaraes or Sandro Tonali, before Tonali sealed a £100 million transfer to Tottenham.
As a result, the focus has now shifted firmly towards the Newcastle captain, though discussions between the clubs have so far been preliminary.
According to journalist David Ornstein, intermediaries have explored the terms of a potential £60 million deal, although Arsenal have not yet made direct contact with Newcastle.
A formal and improved offer from the North London side is anticipated soon, marking a significant development in the player’s stance.
Since joining from Lyon in 2022, Guimaraes has been a crucial figure in Newcastle’s midfield and has often spoken about his ambition to build something special on Tyneside.
However, at 28 years old, the midfielder appears enticed by the opportunity to compete for major trophies at another club.
His World Cup campaign ended in personal disappointment when he missed a penalty in Brazil’s last-16 elimination at the hands of Norway — a setback that may have reinforced his desire for a fresh start.
Despite that, Guimaraes’ quality and influence remain unquestioned, and Newcastle are determined to retain his services.
The Magpies have already seen key players Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon depart this summer, and losing their captain would necessitate another major rebuilding effort.
Manager Eddie Howe is keen to avoid a repeat of the prolonged Alexander Isak transfer saga from last year, maintaining a firm stance in negotiations.
Guimaraes still has two years remaining on his contract, with an option for an additional year, and Newcastle insist that he is not for sale.
Given the current market for top midfielders, the club are expected to demand significantly more than the £60 million figure currently under discussion.
Any resolution to the situation may take time. Should Arsenal succeed in signing Guimaraes, the club may look to offload one of their existing midfielders, with Christian Norgaard among the potential departures.
