Rings have been used throughout in the fashion world since ancient times. From thin bands that adorn many fingers to statement rings that are such highlights of everyday fashion. Some may think that people who wear lots of rings are merely looking to attract attention, but according to psychology, there might be other reasons for this behaviour.
Rings signify many different ideas for people, such as identity, achievements in life, memories, and ways of showing oneself to the world around. The selected and worn rings can show many things about a person and help one express how they feel about themselves and others around them.
One of the best theories in this area is the Extended Self Theory, proposed by consumer psychologist Russell Belk. This concept explains that a person considers certain items as part of their identity. Through being just objects, important belongings become part of self-image.
Another theory to be mentioned is symbolic self-completion theory, founded by psychologists Robert Wicklund and Peter Gollwitzer, which states that people utilise symbols of importance to execute another aspect of their self-concept.
The relation of self-expression and personality
It is evident from the studies of psychologists engaged in the field of self-expression that people naturally express their personality through their appearance. The way people dress, comb their hair, and use body art, for example, tells many things about themselves. Those who use big rings are more likely to be creative people. On the other hand, one may wear a simple band, which indicates the love of simplicity.
Most people think that if someone wears several rings, they want to attract others, but psychologists don't agree with this assumption. The truth is that rings are selected for emotional reasons that everyone finds personal. They signify something important, preserve memory, or allow people to express themselves. Therefore, it can be concluded that multiple rings don't mean that a person is trying to express any message.
