Just as extra time seemed inevitable, Senne Lammens’ fumble from a Pau Cubarsí strike was ruthlessly punished by Mikel Merino, sending Spain to their second World Cup semi-final.
OFF THE LINE
What a heart-stopping moment for Belgium. Alexis Saelemaekers rounded Unai Simón and chipped towards goal, but Aymeric Laporte made a last-ditch recovery to clear off the line.

Pau Cubarsí unleashed a powerful drive straight at Lammens, who spilled it into the path of Mikel Merino. The midfielder made no mistake, smashing the ball high into the net.
Spain are turning the screw as the clock ticks down. Lamine Yamal controls the ball in the box once more, but Belgium manage to clear their lines.
Yamal nearly reached a lofted pass over the Belgian defence, but his touch was too heavy and Lammens collected safely.
A tough blow for Belgium as Thibaut Courtois was forced off with an injury. Manchester United’s Senne Lammens replaced him for the final stretch.

Belgium broke forward on the counter and appealed for a penalty after the ball struck Rodri’s arm before Kevin De Bruyne’s shot was saved by Simón. The referee waved away the appeals.

Spain maintain control of possession and tempo. Yamal tries his luck again from distance, but Courtois produces another fine save.

Belgium show their counter-attacking strength once more, with Maxim De Kuyper breaking through and firing narrowly into the side-netting.

That Belgian equaliser certainly caught La Roja by surprise.

Fabián Ruiz’s early strike was quickly cancelled out by Charles De Ketelaere’s brave header. All square at the break!

In their first meaningful attack, Belgium struck back! Charles De Ketelaere reacted quickest to a cross and headed low past Simón, scoring Spain’s first conceded goal of the 2026 World Cup.
Yamal remains a constant threat, cutting inside from the right flank and firing into the side netting.
CHANCE SPAIN
Spain increase their intensity again. Yamal’s low free-kick is pushed away by Courtois.
That was Fabián Ruiz’s maiden World Cup goal, and Spain look eager to build on it with sustained possession.
GOOOAL SPAIN
Dani Olmo’s sweeping shot was parried by Courtois, but the loose ball fell for Fabián Ruiz, who blasted home to give Spain the lead.
The match resumes for the remainder of the first half.

Lamine Yamal drove at the Belgian defence and curled an effort narrowly wide of the post.
Belgium responded with intent, as Maxim De Cuyper’s floated cross was comfortably claimed by Simón.
Belgium cleared the initial danger from a Spanish corner, but Spain recycled possession, and Rodri’s powerful shot was blocked.
Spain earned a dangerous free-kick after Yamal was fouled near the edge of Belgium’s penalty area.
