Once upon a time, a poor Brahmin lived with his family in a village. The Brahmin's wife was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and used to observe every Pradosh fast with full devotion. Once his son was going to bathe in Ganga. While he was resting on the way, the king's soldiers mistook him for a robber and caught him.
Without knowing the whole story the king sent him to jail. That very night, by the grace of Lord Shiva, the king had a dream that the child was innocent. If he is not freed immediately then the state will be in trouble. The next morning the king called the boy's parents and released him honorably.
Also, he donated five villages to the poor Brahmin family to help them. In this way, by the grace of Lord Shiva, the poor Brahmin started living happily. It is believed that by observing Pradosh Vrat with true devotion, Lord Shiva protects his devotees from every trouble and bestows happiness and prosperity in life.
