England head coach Thomas Tuchel has made what is likely to be a divisive team selection decision ahead of their crucial clash with Norway.
The Three Lions have progressed to the quarter-finals of the 2026 World Cup after recording victories over Croatia, Panama, DR Congo, and Mexico along the way.
Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane have been standout performers for England throughout the tournament, though Tuchel has faced a persistent challenge in filling the right-back position.
Djed Spence has deputised for Reece James, who continues to remain unavailable for selection, or at least unable to feature from the start in Miami this evening.
Back-up defender Jarell Quansah missed the Round of 32 tie against DR Congo due to an ankle injury and was later sent off following a VAR review during England’s 3-2 Round of 16 victory over Mexico. His dismissal has resulted in a two-match suspension, leaving him available only for the World Cup Final should England progress that far.
Although Spence recovered sufficiently to appear as a second-half substitute against Mexico, Tuchel has opted not to start him at right-back for this encounter.
Instead, the German tactician has deployed Ezri Konsa in the right-back role, shifting the Aston Villa defender from his usual central position and reinstating experienced centre-back John Stones alongside Marc Guehi.
Stones and Guehi, both former teammates of Norway’s prolific striker Erling Haaland, will face the formidable task of containing the seven-goal forward, who remains in contention for the Golden Boot and is determined to propel his country deep into the tournament.
Tuchel has once again decided to keep 6ft 7in defender Dan Burn as a substitute option, just as he did against Mexico, rather than using his height and strength to physically counter Haaland from the outset.
In what many will consider another bold call, Tuchel is expected to start Noni Madueke on the right wing in place of Bukayo Saka. The Arsenal winger sat out the Mexico match as an unused substitute and will now be handed a starting opportunity.
According to FourFourTwo, Tuchel’s selections reflect his characteristic bravery and tactical conviction. The manager is known for making decisive choices in pressure situations and remains best positioned to judge his players given his close involvement with the squad.
While some England supporters may question the decision to prefer Madueke over Saka, Tuchel appears confident in his strategy for the match.
Confirmed England XI: Pickford; Konsa, Guehi, Stones, O'Reilly; Anderson, Rice, Bellingham; Madueke, Gordon, Kane.
Substitutes: D. Henderson, Trafford, Chalobah, Burn, James, Spence, Mainoo, Rogers, Eze, Saka, Rashford, Watkins, Toney.
