According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Nag Panchami is celebrated on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of Saavan (Shravan) month. In the year 2026, Nag Panchami will be celebrated on Monday, 17th August. On this day, there is a tradition of special worship of Lord Shiva and Nag Devta.

Worship like this on Nag Panchami

On the day of Nag Panchami, wake up in the morning in Brahma Muhurta, take bath and wear clean clothes. After this, make a symbol of Nag Devta with cow dung or soil near the worship place or main entrance of the house. If this is not possible then worship can also be done by installing a picture or statue of the snake god. During the worship, offer flowers, milk, rice and other offerings to the snake god. Perform puja methodically by lighting incense sticks and lamps and perform aarti with devotion. It is also considered auspicious to listen or read the story of Nag Panchami at the end of the puja. It is believed that worship done with a true heart maintains happiness and peace in the family and many obstacles in life are removed.

Importance of worshiping Lord Shiva on Nag Panchami

Worship of Lord Shiva is also said to have special significance on the occasion of Nag Panchami. According to religious beliefs, offering raw milk after performing Jalabhishek of Shivalinga on this day is considered auspicious. Chanting the mantra ‘Om Namah Shivay’ during the puja brings peace to the mind and maintains the blessings of Lord Shiva. It is considered auspicious to use a copper pot for Jalabhishek. On this day, devotees pray to Lord Shiva for family happiness, prosperity, good health and freedom from problems in life.
