The proposed transfer between Atalanta and Manchester United for midfielder Ederson appears to have been put on hold for now. However, fresh updates on Monday suggest that the Premier League giants could reconsider the move later in the summer transfer window, even as discussions continue for Aston Villa’s Youri Tielemans.
In June, reports indicated that United had reached an agreement with Atalanta to sign the Brazilian international Ederson in a deal valued at up to €45 million, including bonuses and performance-related add-ons.
However, sources last week revealed that the deal had hit a snag due to concerns regarding the midfielder’s medical and overall fitness condition.
Ederson initially underwent medical assessments in the United States before Brazil’s World Cup campaign began and was later flown to the United Kingdom for further examinations with Manchester United’s medical team. Subsequently, multiple outlets confirmed that the deal had been shelved for the time being.
According to a report by David Ornstein from The Athletic, United are now in advanced discussions to sign 29-year-old Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa instead.
This follows United’s agreement with Chelsea on a £50 million deal for Brazilian midfielder Andrey Santos.
Nonetheless, The Athletic notes that United might still opt to revisit the Ederson situation later in the summer, as manager Michael Carrick aims to overhaul his midfield unit with at least two or three new signings. The report adds that it ‘remains to be seen’ whether Atalanta and Ederson would be open to resuming negotiations.
In Munich, Germany, on 18 March 2026, Ederson featured for Atalanta in their UEFA Champions League 2025/26 Round of 16 second-leg match against FC Bayern Munich at the Football Arena Munich.
Meanwhile, Italian sources claim that Atalanta are eager to secure Ederson on a new contract. The Brazilian, whose current deal in Bergamo runs until the summer of 2027, is entering its final year. The club believes a contract extension would strengthen their negotiating position should the player pursue a transfer in the future. La Dea are also emphatic that Ederson is currently fully fit and injury-free.
